What would Duchamp have thought about all the AI hype? My take is that, considering he was already attacking “retinal” art and the fetishization of craftsmanship, he’d find it pretty funny that this supposedly revolutionary technology is mostly being celebrated for making prettier, slicker, more realistic images faster. He’d probably be far more interested in what AI does to chance, selection and authorship, then troll everyone by exhibiting only the prompt, signing an AI image with someone else’s name, or passing off something entirely human-made as AI.
Would Duchamp Have Been an AI Skeptic?
